Announcements for March/April
Shelby. Send announcements to gowannouncements@gmail.com by 6:00 p.m. on Thursday and please indicate how many weeks you would like the announcement to run.
You are invited to "The Gathering," THIS Wednesday, March 7
Everyone is welcome to join us for a soup supper from 6-7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7 in our usual worship space. The soup will be provided and you are asked to bring bread or dessert to share and your own eating utensils. As you're able, please make a small contribution to pay for the ingredients.
Thought for Today
How did your day begin? How is your day going now? How we begin each day sets the tone for the day ahead. What kind of day did you set in motion?
This statement is part of a daily reflection that Tessa & I received through the Convergence Leadership Project we are a part of this year. We are often challenged to consider the teachings of our faith traditions, what does it mean to truly love, and how does it look when we are church in the world in every part of our lives. If you would like to reflect/explore this further, talk to Linda.
From the AGM
Thank you to all who participated in the Annual General Meeting and Leadership Search Discussion. The 2017 financial statements and the 2018 budget of $117,560.00 will be available on the GOW website in the next few weeks.
Membership Document Discussion
If you are a GOW member, your presence and participation is invited on Wednesday, March 21 at 7 pm for our continuing discussion around the acceptance of our membership document. Please watch your email for the current draft of the document and further information the week of March 11. If you have questions/concerns/ideas; please talk to Linda.
WestEnd Commons Update
Access - As you have probably noticed, the hours that the basement of WestEnd Commons is open to the community have once again been reduced. The basement is open only from 1 – 4 pm Monday to Friday. At other times access is gained via the doorbell and permission from the program staff or you can gain access because you have a key. If you are using a key to gain access, please make sure to lock the door behind you and do not let others in without permission of program staff.
Washrooms - The time when the washrooms at WestEnd Commons are locked has arrived! They will be locked with key access required as of Monday, March 5, 2018. Keys will be available on the Sound Board table. Please note that the doors have different keys and take the appropriate one. Please return the key to the Sound Board table. Feel free to let other GOW people into the washroom when you are there and as you are leaving, you cannot lock yourself into the washrooms. While Linda does have a second set of keys to the washrooms, if we lock the keys into the bathrooms, you may need to get building staff to retrieve the key.
Thank you for your ongoing understanding and patience as people work to make WestEnd Commons a safe space for residents, tenants, employees, and the community. If you have questions, comments or concerns; please talk to Linda.

New Servant Leaders!
We are celebrating! Grain of Wheat has two new servant leaders beginning April 1. Lynda Loeppky and Lloyd Penner will join Linda Dueck on the servant leader team for approximately the next year. The end of their terms will be determined when Tessa returns from her maternity leave. We hope that everyone will support them and cheer them on. Thanks for your participation in the search.
Shelby's GoW Responsibilities
Since Shelby has gotten the Administrative Assistant job for GoW, it appears as though there has been some confusion about what she exactly does and what she's in charge of. The things that she does that are important for everyone to know about are listed below:
  • website maintenance - if you have anything to add to the website or you have questions about it, you can talk to Shelby
  • Facebook page administrator
  • Safe Church documentation - if you want to become an Approved Adult, you can talk to Shelby. Most of the forms you have to fill out are already on the website under the Safe Church tab, but you still need to ask Shelby for some of the paperwork, such as the Child Abuse Registry Check papers and how to get your Police Information Check. Feel free to ask Shelby if you have any questions about the process.
  • She has a set of keys
  • Worship committee support - taking over Tessa's administrative duties while she's on mat. leave
  • Organizing church events (the Gathering, Lent candle snuffers, meal trains (some of them), etc.)
If you have any questions about her responsibilities, you can contact Shelby at shelbygaekefranz@gmail.com
Community Dinner
Grain of Wheat Church Community and Silver Heights United Church will be hosting a St. Patrick's Dinner for the St. Matthews Community on Friday March 16.
It has been several years since we hosted Christmas Dinners with St. Matthews Church.  It was a great time of working together and meeting some of the people that live in the community and use the services of St. Matthews Maryland Community Ministries.  We now have another opportunity to host a dinner for the community residents, although it will be on a much smaller scale.
There will be a list available of the items Grain of Wheat will be donating for the dinner. Please check the list and sign up for what you are able to contribute.  If you have questions, contact Lynda Loeppky.
An Invitation to Celebrate with Annie
Blessings, with Numbers 6:25: "The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you."
Lord willing, I'll reach my 88th birthday on March 13 and plan to celebrate on Saturday, March 17, 2018 from 7:30 - 8:30 pm. This is your invitation to attend the celebration in the Assembly Hall at WestEnd Commons. Program from 7:30 - 8:00 pm; refreshments 8:00 - 8:30 pm.
Instead of a gift, I want to invite you, if you wish, to make a contribution to the Annie Janzen Bursary Fund for International Students at CMU (cheques payable to Abundance Canada  12-1325 Markham Road, Winnipeg, Mb  R3T 4J6). Please respond to Annie (204-774-2970) by March 10 if you are coming.
Dancers Needed!
We are a few days away from Lent and Easter Sunday is not that far off either. I (Paul L) am leading Easter worship. I don't think we have a dance coordinator at the moment since Gabrielle moved away. I am wondering if there is anybody in Grain of Wheat who would love to work on the Was it a Morning Like This? dance for Easter morning worship on April 1, 2018. Please contact Paul if you would like to coordinate the dance or if you would like to be part of the dance. Here is my email (plangel@shaw.ca) or my cell (204-470-9668). Calling my cell or texting both work.
